One thing I’ve learned in quality work is that paperwork problems usually point to other skipped steps. When the registration doesn’t match, I start asking more questions, not fewer.

The highest wear on a concrete pump is not at the end of the boom. It’s where the concrete changes direction: the material cylinder, the transfer tube or rock valve, the cutting ring, and the heavy outlet elbow behind the hopper.
Ask the owner to shut down the power unit, lock out / tag out the machine, and open the access cover. Use a bright light. Look for scoring in the material cylinder, broken seal rings, and uneven wear on the valve face. If the wear path is past its useful life, price the replacement before you make an offer. That is not a reason to walk away by itself; it is a reason to adjust your number.
There is one part service crews check that rarely appears in a listing photo: the heavy bend where the material leaves the hopper and turns into the delivery line. Some crews call that bend the “skull crusher” because it crushes whatever is left of the aggregate on the way through. It is an honest wear part. What matters is knowing whether it will survive your first 500 yards, not whether it looks shiny in the photo.
3. Do an oil analysis, not just a dipstick check
Hydraulic oil can look clean and still hide expensive problems. Don’t judge the hydraulic system by color alone. Take an oil sample and send it to an independent lab before you commit. A $125 oil analysis is cheap compared with the cost of a failed hydraulic motor or a contaminated pump.
I’ve seen a pump that had fresh oil and clean filters but still showed coolant in the hydraulic circuit. The radiator-style oil cooler had a tiny internal leak. Fresh oil didn’t fix that. It only delayed the discovery.
If the seller replaced filters just before your visit, that’s not automatically suspicious. Ask if they have the invoices. A documented service history is better than a detailed undercarriage. Without documentation, assume the hydraulic system needs a full service and add that to your total cost.
4. Pump water, not air
A running test has to be a wet test. Pumping air will not show you how the system behaves under load. Ask the seller to set up a water supply and a safe discharge area. Then run the pump for at least 20 minutes at operating temperature.
During the run, watch for the following:
- Unstable pressure readings or continuous relief valve noise.
- Leaks that appear after the hydraulics warm up.
- Delayed response from the remote control.
- Jerky cylinder changeover that gets worse as the hopper empties.
Also test the emergency stop and the visual warnings. If the emergency stop does not kill the engine or disable the pump immediately, that is not a minor issue. That is a safety defect.
5. Measure the boom and delivery line
A lot of buyers walk around the machine and judge the equipment by the paint. Paint is not a structural measurement. On a boom pump, look at the boom pivot pins, bushings, welds, and outrigger pads. On any Schwing concrete pump, ask about the delivery line condition.
If the delivery pipe wall is thin, the pipe can fail under pressure. That is not just a cleanup cost. It can be a safety incident. Ask whether any recent thickness tests were done on the pipe. 6. Price the next two years, not just the sticker
Total cost thinking is the part of the purchase that most people skip. The asking price is only the first number. The real question is what this machine will cost to own over the next two years.
Before you make an offer, make a list of the common wear items for that exact model:
- Material cylinder or cylinder lining condition
- Piston cups and seals
- Rock valve seals or wear plate
- Outlet elbow / “skull crusher” bend
- Hydraulic oil, filters, and hoses
Call a parts source and get current prices and availability. Then add labor time for the items that are already borderline. That gives you a more honest comparison than the listing price.
A lower-priced machine with deferred maintenance is often more expensive than a higher-priced machine that has recent service records. That is not a theory. It’s a routine pattern in equipment purchasing. The cheapest first bid can become the most expensive total ownership cost by the end of the first season.
7. Put the delivery and unloading plan in writing
The purchase is not complete when you sign. It is complete when the machine is off the trailer and ready to work. Plan that step before you sign.
Know the exact weight, width, height, and tie-down points of the unit. If it’s a truck-mounted boom pump, confirm whether the route needs permits. If it’s a line pump or parts skid, confirm how the freight company will unload it.
Do not solve the receiving equipment question at the end of the driveway. The reach truck vs forklift question matters because they are different machines for different conditions. Here are a few mistakes I see again and again after the sale begins.
1. Trusting a freshly washed machine. If the seller pressure-washed the pump right before your visit, run it hot before you decide. Hot operation shows leaks that cold washing hides for exactly fifteen minutes.
2. Ignoring the cost of the first service. If there are no maintenance records, plan a full service before the first production pour. That means engine service, hydraulic oil service, lubrication points, and a careful check of every grease fitting. Skipping that step almost always costs more.
3. Treating “rebuilt” as a single definition. Ask whether the rebuilt valve or cylinder was brought back to OEM specification. Rebuilt can mean disassembled, cleaned, and installed. It can also mean properly measured and rebuilt with the correct replacement parts. Those are different machines.
4. Not writing down what the seller promised. If the seller agrees to fix a leak or replace a hose, put it in the sales contract. Include the machine hours, the date, and the repair description. Verbal promises are not quality documents.
