Common mistakes I've made so you don't have to
I've coordinated eight concrete pump purchases over the last decade, including two used Schwing units. I'm not an engineer, so I'm not going to lecture you on hydraulic flow or valve geometry. I'm the person who handles the quoting, the financing, the delivery coordination, and the warranty calls. And after a decade of equipment purchases, I can tell you that the spec sheet is where deals get won and lost.
This checklist is for you if you're a concrete contractor, an equipment dealer, or someone in a construction company who's been handed the job of buying a Schwing concrete pump. You already know you want a Schwing. Now you need to verify the specifications without getting snowed. Here's my seven-step process, in the order I actually run it.
1. First, pick the pump category—boom pump vs. line pump
Schwing sells both truck-mounted boom pumps and trailer line pumps, and neither is “better.” A boom pump carries its own reach and can place concrete over obstacles. A line pump sits in a fixed spot and pushes concrete through hoses and pipe to where the crew needs it.
The specs you compare depend entirely on that choice:
- For a boom pump: boom length, number of articulated sections, vertical reach, horizontal reach, outrigger spread.
- For a line pump: output in cubic yards per hour, pressure, and the pump's ability to handle the total line length you plan to run.
Don't let the salesperson pick for you. Review your most common jobs and your most difficult jobs. If you mostly do slabs at grade, a 60-meter boom is an expensive luxury. If half your work is in tight urban basements, a long boom might not even fit through the gate. There's a reason both categories exist.
2. Look past the maximum reach number
Everybody reads the vertical reach line on a boom pump spec sheet. Vertical reach is easy, it's in the brochure, and it usually looks impressive. But the numbers you actually need are the horizontal reach and the folded transport height.
A boom that stretches far vertically might still have awkward horizontal reach at certain elevations. More importantly, the folded height of the boom determines whether the pump can get under bridges, overpasses, tree lines, and into your storage yard. I learned this the hard way: I assumed a bigger boom would fit into our yard because the yard was “big.” The overhead power line at the entrance said otherwise.
If the spec sheet doesn't list folded height and horizontal reach at relevant angles, ask for the dimension drawing. That's not an unreasonable request.
3. Don't separate output and pressure
On a line pump, the two numbers that matter are output and pressure. They're related. The manufacturer lists a peak output, but that peak usually happens at low pressure. Real-world output drops when you're pushing concrete up three stories or through 300 feet of pipe.
So ask the dealer: “At what output can this pump maintain working pressure?” If they hesitate, that's a yellow flag.
The other spec that gets ignored is the maximum aggregate size the pump can handle. The general rule of thumb is that the largest coarse aggregate should be about one-third of the pipeline diameter. In my experience, that's the spec people skip. You can pump bigger rock if the mix is designed for it, but I'm not the person to advise that. I am the person who now double-checks it after one of our mix designs was borderline for the line size and we paid for it all day.
4. Consider an electric Schwing pump if your jobs allow it
Schwing electric pumps are one of the most overlooked spec options. If you work on jobsites with emission rules, indoor pours, or noise-sensitive neighbors, an electric pump is worth a serious look. No diesel exhaust, much less noise, and lower running cost per yard.
But here's the catch: you need power available where you're pumping. Not “we'll figure it out later” power. Real, verified electrical service. Before you spec an electric unit, confirm the required voltage, phase, and amperage, and whether the site has the hookup or a generator with enough capacity. I've nearly made that mistake twice, and both times it was pure luck that someone checked before ordering.
Also worth asking: whether your jurisdiction offers incentives for electric construction equipment. Some do, and I'd be embarrassed to tell you how long it took me to realize those programs exist. To be fair, the incentive landscape changes constantly, so don't assume—verify.
5. Verify the truck bed, chassis, and transport package
You're not just buying the pump. You're buying the whole transport package, and this is where box trucks, truck beds, and weight limits enter the conversation.
Most Schwing boom pumps live on a truck chassis, and the pump, hopper, and outriggers are mounted on a reinforced truck bed. That truck has a gross vehicle weight rating, and the pump alone doesn't tell you whether you'll need a CDL, a special permit, or a different route to avoid a low bridge. Get the fully loaded weight, the width over the mirrors, and the height over the boom, and then run it against your actual job sites.
Box trucks usually aren't for the pump itself—they're for the pipeline, elbows, hoses, and clamps that travel with it. A line pump job can have thousands of pounds of pipe and accessories, and it's easy to under-budget that shipping. I once had a crew rent a second truck just for the line because the original transport plan only accounted for the pump. That was a fun invoice.
Ask two questions: What's the gross vehicle weight on the road, and what's the accessory package? Then check your gate widths, turning radii, and bridge postings before delivery day.
6. Ask about wear parts, not just the engine hours
If you're buying used Schwing pumps—and the market has plenty of them—everyone asks about hours. I used to, too. But hours only tell you how long the truck ran, not how the concrete side was maintained. The parts that actually wear are the rock valve, the wear plate, the cutting ring, and the delivery cylinders.
When I bought my first used Schwing pump, the dealer mentioned the wear parts were “recently rebuilt.” I didn't ask to see invoices. Six months later, the rock valve needed a complete rebuild, and the replacement parts alone cost me more than I'd saved on the purchase. I still kick myself over that one.
Whether you're buying new or used, ask about OEM parts availability. Schwing has a genuine parts network—Schwing America parts and their dealer network—and that's one of the reasons the brand holds its value. Maybe I'm biased, but when a pump is down in the middle of a pour, a copy part that needs grinding to fit is not your friend.
7. Get every specification in writing before you sign
This sounds obvious, but I keep seeing it go wrong. A salesperson says “comes with a full line package” or “we'll include the hose kit.” You nod, you sign, and when the pump arrives, your definition of “full” and their definition of “full” are not the same.
I always ask for these in written form:
- The exact model and serial number.
- The full equipment list, including standard and optional accessories with part numbers.
- The spec sheet, plus a signed confirmation of any attachments or modifications.
- The delivery terms and what's excluded—unloading, permits, secondary transport.
- The warranty coverage, including whether wear parts are excluded.
If a dealer won't put it in writing, that's your answer.
Common mistakes I've made so you don't have to
- Comparing peak outputs without comparing pressure. The pump that wins the brochure battle can lose the project.
- Ignoring aggregate size limits. It's the kind of spec you don't think about until the mix design team asks you about it.
- Assuming “electric” means “plug it in.” It means finding the right power source and paying for the connection.
- Checking the pump dimensions but not the transport package. The gate that fits a pump might not fit a box truck loaded with 50 feet of delivery line.
- Buying a used pump without wear-part history. Hours are a starting point, not the whole story.
And one thing I want to leave you with: don't let a small order make you shy. If you're a two-pump company, you still deserve the same verification process and the same honest answers as a fleet buyer. A dealer who treats your first small purchase like an inconvenience is telling you what the relationship will look like when you need support. The dealer who handles your $200,000 order with the same seriousness as a $2 million account? That's the one you call again.
Run the checklist before you sign. The spec sheet on paper is a promise. The pump on your yard is the reality. You want them to match.
